A Green Day in Palos Verdes @ ReLiving Magazine

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we only borrow it from our children”.

This ancient proverb is one of many  reasons as to why green vacations are a new and trendy way to travel for the jet set that don’t want to leave a carbon footprint on their favorite planet.  “Eco Travel” can be defined as “Responsible travel to natural areas, which conserves the environment, contributes to the local economy and minimizes your impact.” These trips can not only be good for the environment, but great fun.

Terranea Resort – Palos Verdes, California

Check in to the brand new Terranea Resort, an oceanfront earth-friendly eco-resort located in the rolling green hills of Rancho Palos Verdes. Not only is the gorgeous resort green, with a commitment to environmentally sustainable practices and energy conservation efforts, but the critically acclaimed restaurants feature an emphasis on local and organic foods.  The resort was created with understanding to its native environment and sustainability. The 582 neutral colored rooms feature patios and balconies awash with natural light, and unparallel views of the Pacific Ocean and pristine grounds. When venturing out of your comfortable adobe, the hotel has an on-staff trained naturalist for guided tours and will provide transportation within 5 miles, including to the nearby Trump Golf Course. Complimentary yoga and Pilates classes add to the list of green and healthy amenities at Terranea.

Start off your exploration with a healthy, environmentally-friendly bike ride tour. Not only do you get to take in all of the different sights and sounds the Rolling Hills has to offer, but you get a wonderful workout in the warm Californian sunshine. Horse trails, ocean cliffs and tidepools are a typical site in the lush landscape of Palos Verdes.

Once you are done biking, visit the South Coast Botanical Garden, which is an oasis of lush landscaping. Over 150,000 landscaped plants call the garden home, as well as a family of ducks, geese, coots and heron. Several different gardens are showcased over the 87 acre property, including the Water-wise Garden, Herb Garden, English Rose Garden, Japanese Garden and Garden of the Senses. Over 2,500 different species come from places as far away as Australia and Southern Africa.

Abalone Cove Abalone Cove – Palos Verdes, California

Exploring the scenic coastal drive is best by car. Palos Verdes Drive will take you by some of the most scenic spots in Palos Verdes. Leaving the Terranea Resort, head done to Abalone Cove. Named after the Abalone shells found on the beach, this remote beach is perfect for daytime hiking. Trails lead to Portuguese Bend to the left and Inspiration Point to the right. Further on down the way on the left hand side you will see a small little chapel. You have stumbled upon Wayfarer’s Chapel. This redwood, glass and local stone chapel were designed by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright. Lloyd Wright is said to have been inspired by his spiritual feelings after visiting a redwood forest.

Donald Trump National Golf Course – Palos Verdes, California

Continuing the drive you will come to your last stop, the Trump National Golf Club. This picturesque, open-to-the-public golf club sports a 45,000 clubhouse, 3 dining options, pro-shop, ballroom and conference rooms. After Donald Trump bought the property in 2002, he closed and remodeled location, reopening in 2006 with 18 holes.  Stop into Café Pacific for a meal to be remembered. With sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, dine on a seasonal menu of fresh seafood, delectable meats or savory pastas. Try the strawberry Endive Salad followed by the pan roasted Miso Marinated black cod for a light but delicious meal.

Fall Fashion Foward @ Disarray Magazine

by Kimberly Fisher
Contributing Writer
Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Just because we don’t experience a prominent change of season in the City of Angels, doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the newest looks for the fall. Check out some of these hot looks:

Neon Pink

Shockingly sexy neon pink is seen on everything from frilly dresses to bold accessories. Ultra feminine Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors were seen sporting the high wattage hot pink hue down the runways of Fashion Week.

One Shoulder

Show a little skin this fall when the one-shoulder look makes a comeback in everything from cute tops to sophisticated dresses.

Structured Shape

Flaunting your figure will be back (goodbye billowy baby dolls!) with structured, built lines. Everything from jackets with square, boxy shoulders to an edgy, fresh update on the little black dress will be popular.

Classic Black and White

This refined, sophisticated combination holds strong for the fall months. Bold graphic patterns make a statement, while dresses tend to be capricious. Always a good choice: high quality separates.

Dark Glamour

Sporting an understated, Goth-inspired look will be big on the west coast as casual chic wearables. West Coast designers flaunt velvety jackets, distressed knits and old Hollywood-inspired Vintage.

Mod Metals

Metallics add shine and glam to the season with everything from sequins, shimmer, sparkle, glitz and embellishments.

Courageous Cuts

Cutting edge creations are bold, sexy and provocative. From plunging necklines to daring cutouts, this time of year exhibits a fresh new way to look at fashion.

Dating Tips: What Not to Say @ Disarray Magazine

by Kimberly Fisher
Contributing Writer
Saturday, October 24, 2009

Everyone gets nervous on a first date, but these lapses in judgment could get you a glass of wine in the face.

We’ve all been there: that nervous, clammy first date with the hottie sitting across the table. Not knowing anything about her, you struggle for words…conversation and the comment about how great you ex-girlfriend was in bed slips out. You probably just lost with Miss Right — even if she’s just Miss Right-Now. To make sure you keep you’re “A” game at all times, here are some things you should not bring up on your first date.

“I’ve been on that dating site for three years.”

What does that translate into for us?
• You’re a serial dater and therefore undesirable.
• You’re a loser and no one in real life would ever go out with you.
• You’re a loser and apparently have deep rooted issues that keep you hiding on the web.
Take your pick — none of them translate into you getting a second date.

“My ex is…”

Great in bed; sitting at the next table; an evil bitch. Women know you have a past and we are not going to hold that against you. What we will hold against you is if you keep bringing up our predecessors. It shows you can’t let go of the past or — ever worse — still live in it. It proves that we’re not as interesting as them and if it’s topped with extremely angry, bitter, or disrespectful comments, the red flag is going up and the date is going downhill fast. Bottom line: don’t mention the ex!

“You look…in real life.”

Shorter; skinnier; younger; prettier; better. No one wants to hear an off-handed compliment. They always sound like an insult — she hears that she looks bad in pictures or that she’s more disappointing in real life. Criticizing will get you nowhere on a first date except home in time to catch the late show. On the same note, never ask if anything is real, including the color of her eyes or the size of anything you find impressive. Not only will we write you off as classless and tacky, it may get you a glass of wine in the face.

“Do you have any…”

STDs; fantasies; sex toys. Whether you are asking to check out the goods for yourself later that night or are feeling guilty about your recently contracted herpes, never ask someone about their sexual history, preferences, or proclivity on a first date. This should also include number of partners, past sexual orientation, and other too-personal-for-the-dinner-table questions.

“I don’t get many…”

Dates; friends; job offers. If you haven’t learned this from watching the quarterback in high school, the confident guy has a way better chance with the girl. Putting yourself down won’t win you sympathy or earn you any points. Girls can sense when a guy has low self-esteem, no backbone, and is wishy-washy about everything. Feign confidence if you have to, but don’t go into the date a spineless little boy. First dates should always be fond memories; go forth as a man.

So, remember to censor yourself before you tell your date something you’ll regret later. Follow our tips and score a second date.

How to Make Packing Quick and Painless @ ehow.com

By Kimberly Fisher

Does the thought of packing send you in a tizzy? No fear. With these tips, packing will be quick and easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Luggage, Overnight Bag, Makeup Bag, Packing List.
  1. Step 1

Have pre-packed toiletry kit. Nothing puts a downer on a trip more than when you are scrambling for product in the middle of nowhere. In my Chanel Toiletry Kit I keep the essentials; travel toothbrush, travel sized toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, conditioner, facial scrub, body wash, comb, razor, q-tips, deodorant, baby powder, shaving cream, facial moisturizer, band-aids, toenail clippers, tooth whitener, lint brush and misc. pills for different ailments. For loner trips (1 week plus) I also pack wrinkle-free spray, jet-lag pills, spot remover stick, Vaseline and sunscreen. Everything comes in sample size for your convenience!

Pre pack your makeup bag. The grab and go approach will do wonders for your pre-packing stress levels! My essentials include: foundation, cover up, eye shadow, blush, lip glosses and moisturizers, powder, lip and eye liners, eyelash curler, and mascara. Tailor your bag to fit your needs!

  2. Step 2

Have a clothing packing list. No matter where I am going, it stays pretty much the same. (Mine looks a little something like this: lingerie, jeans, black pants, black skirt, knit wrinkle free dresses, black dress, knit layering tops, sweater or sweatshirt, denim jacket, lightweight trench, pashmina, tennis shoes, flip-flops, ballet slippers, heels, workout clothes, bikini, evening bag, jewelry bag.) It pays to stay with a neutral color palette, so you don’t have to worry about not matching! Make sure all clothes are “easy to wear” and “go anywhere”.

Have a “You Kit” that makes sure you have all the comforts you need while being away. A typical “You Kit” could be scented travel candles, eye masks, a great book, packets of your favorite tea and splenda, and mints, candy or gum. On the plane you could indulge in your favorite healthy snack, your own bottle of water, travel blanket and your ipod.

  3. Step 3

Never pack the important/expensive stuff (cash, passport, medication, jewelry, and camera) in checked luggage. Make sure it is with you at all times!

For the Obsessive Compulsive Traveler; some other items you my find useful are a compass, a small umbrella, portable rain poncho, travel flashlight, zip lock bags, a power converter or a travel alarm clock.

  • I used to work in the Lost Baggage Department of a major airline…and one of the hardest things to do was relocate passengers who had no name on the bag! On of the cheapest and most important things you could do is invest in a Bag Tag! Not only will it identify your bag, but it makes it easier to spot of the carousel! Less is More! With today’s travel fees for extra and overweight baggage, who wants to be over packed? Imagine the ease and simplicity of traveling when you have one well packed and organized bag. Planning ahead can save your stress and pointless airline fees! First, make sure you know the weight and size of your bag…maybe it’s time to toss that hard side bag for a lighter soft side. Second, pack light! Third, make sure you know your airlines baggage regulations.
  • Leave at home anything that could be questionable to security. Say adios to matches, lighters, and flammable liquids, household items that contain chemicals or any other flammable or potentially toxic material. Be Prepared. Travel just got easier with the well-prepared travel. Check your flight status and baggage requirements, pack ahead of time, and make sure you have important documents.

LA Food Truck Scene @ Disarray Magazine

by Kimberly Fisher
Contributing Writer
Tuesday, September 22, 2009

We would like to think that we started it all here in the “City of Angels,” with the original “Roach Coach”. Taco trucks have long been a staple in L.A., but mostly for day workers at a construction site or wasted club kids at 2am. In recent months, L.A. has been home to gourmet trucks wandering the streets featuring anything from delectable deserts to international delights. Check out our guide to these fine on-the-go feasts here:

Kogi BBQ came on the scene with a bang and started the run-around-L.A.-for-your-food trend. With a creative menu consisting of Korean short rib tacos, Kim-Chi Quesadillas and Kogi Sliders, Koji gave L.A. just what they were looking for. Chef Roy is constantly coming up with daily specials, which keep Angelinos coming back for more. Their three trucks roam L.A., with updates posted to Twitter and their website.

Let’s face it, as Pinkberry inspired frozen yogurt, The Kogi BBQ truck inspired Calbi BBQ. Calbi has two trucks to cover L.A. This truck frequently shows up on the Westside and boasts an assortment of tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

Bool BBQ mixes Korean-Brazilian flavors with the popular menu items of Korean BBQ tacos and Pastels (a Brazilian, fried turnover).

Marked 5 is a new face on the streets featuring Japanese-style burgers. Exotic concoctions of beef/pork/salmon or tofu on a rice bun with special sauces and fresh veggies are the main attraction, brought to you by five friends to enchant your five senses. Japanese specialty snacks and drinks are also available.

Don Chow Tacos adds another spin on tacos, this time with a Chinese flair. The menu has traditional Mexican cuisine, along with fusion Kung Pao Chicken, Soy-Ginger shrimp and Chinese BBQ Pork Tacos.

You can’t miss the bright red truck of Let’s be Frank regularly posted around Silver Lake and Culver City. Offering gourmet grass fed beef hot dogs, sausages and brats, the company works with local artisans and producers, and their food is free of hormones, antibiotics and nitrates.

For those wanting a healthier meal, look for the Green Truck On the Go. This truck only serves local, organic foods such as their signature organic vegan burger, Falafel wrap and fresh melon fresca. Committed to the environment all around, they use solar power, biodegradable packaging, environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies and the trucks run off of recycled vegetable oil.

The famous Barbie’s Q has been serving finger-licking good ole BBQ receipts in Santa Monica for years. They took it mobile to better distribute their mouth-watering BBQ ribs, brisket, pork-pulled sandwiches and sliders.

The Border Grill Truck from famed “Too Hot Tamales” Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, comes a mobile menu of gourmet tacos, quesadillas and ceviches.

Putting a spot on the map for Indian food is the Dosa Truck. Dubbed “Slumdog Street Food with a California Twist,” the Dosa truck serves up made to order homemade chutneys, dosa, mango lassis and homemade ginger limeade.

Fish Lips Sushi specializes in yummy rolls from everything to the special fish lips roll (Soy sheet, Avocado, Cucumber, Asparagus, Crab meat, Tuna, White Tuna, White fish, Salmon, Tamari-Sauce, Hot-Sauce, Mayonnaise) to the standard California Roll (Avocado, Cucumber, Crab meat, Mayonnaise, Sesame).

Fresh on the scene is the Vietnamese food truck Nom Nom Truck that specializes in Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches. Traditionally served with charcuterie and pickled vegetables on French bread, this meal also can come with a side of spring rolls or lemongrass tacos.

The Sprinkles Cupcake Van took the Beverly Hills hot spot mobile with their brown van to spread the love of sweet butter cream and bittersweet Belgium chocolate.

More sweet stuff comes your way with the Coolhaus Truck. Freya and Natasha are two female architects that came up with the idea for the perfectly constructed organic ice cream sandwiches in tasty “prefab” flavors like oatmeal cinnamoneo and Richard Meyer Lemon Ginger.
